Background of the Study
Ethnic tensions have historically posed a challenge to social cohesion and national unity in many regions of Nigeria. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, ethnic diversity, while enriching, has also been a source of conflict due to competing interests, historical grievances, and socio-economic disparities. In this complex environment, adult literacy programs have been introduced as a means to foster mutual understanding, critical thinking, and constructive dialogue among diverse groups. By enhancing literacy, these programs aim to empower community members to better understand each other’s cultures, challenge stereotypes, and engage in meaningful interactions that can reduce ethnic tensions (Lukman, 2023). Adult literacy initiatives in Kano have evolved to include components on civic education, conflict resolution, and intercultural communication. These educational efforts are designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to navigate a multicultural society, promoting tolerance and respect for diversity (Olawale, 2024).
The role of education in mitigating ethnic conflict is well-documented, as higher literacy levels facilitate access to information, foster critical analysis of prejudiced narratives, and encourage informed participation in community dialogue. In Kano Municipal, the integration of adult literacy with intercultural training has contributed to a gradual shift in attitudes, with participants reporting increased empathy and willingness to engage with members of different ethnic backgrounds. Such changes are crucial for addressing the root causes of ethnic tensions, as they help dismantle the misconceptions and biases that often lead to conflict (Nneka, 2025). Moreover, adult literacy programs serve as platforms for community engagement where individuals from various ethnic groups collaborate on shared projects and initiatives. These interactions not only build social capital but also promote a sense of collective identity and belonging, thereby reducing the likelihood of interethnic conflicts. The long-term impact of these programs is seen in the emergence of local peace committees and community forums that prioritize dialogue and cooperation over confrontation. This study, therefore, investigates how adult literacy programs can contribute to reducing ethnic tensions in Kano Municipal by fostering mutual understanding and social cohesion, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and harmonious society (Lukman, 2023; Olawale, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Ethnic tensions in Kano Municipal Local Government Area have been exacerbated by historical grievances, economic disparities, and social divisions. Despite efforts by governmental and community organizations to promote unity, deep-seated prejudices continue to fuel conflicts between different ethnic groups. One of the contributing factors to this persistent tension is the low level of adult literacy, which hinders effective communication, critical engagement, and the ability to challenge divisive narratives (Lukman, 2023). The lack of educational opportunities has resulted in a community where misinformation and stereotypes prevail, perpetuating a cycle of mistrust and animosity. Although various initiatives have attempted to address these issues, few have integrated adult literacy with intercultural education. As a result, the potential of education as a tool for reducing ethnic tensions remains largely untapped (Olawale, 2024). Furthermore, the absence of comprehensive strategies that combine literacy training with conflict resolution and civic education limits the scope of current interventions. This gap in educational programming contributes to a continued state of tension, impeding efforts toward long-term peace and social integration. The present study seeks to examine the extent to which adult literacy programs, enhanced with components of intercultural dialogue and conflict resolution, can mitigate ethnic tensions in Kano Municipal. It aims to identify effective educational strategies that promote unity, reduce prejudice, and foster an inclusive community environment. Addressing these challenges is critical for building a sustainable framework for peace and social cohesion in the region (Lukman, 2023; Olawale, 2024; Nneka, 2025).
